I came across this video and just had to share. If you have kids you know how hard it is to haul everything down on the sand, and then to keep sand out of everything. Well this video will help to solve some of those issues!

We’re Redefining Thrift Stores

We’re Redefining Thrift Stores

There are so many directions I could go with that statement. One way would be to finish what I started last month with more home decor ideas. But instead, I found the posting below from 2009 on one of those Facebook Memories and thought…”well, here you go!”  Funny thing is I don’t know what I meant by We’re Redefining Thrift Stores when I wrote this seven years ago!  Maybe you can figure it out.

From 2009

At Christmas, I was given a gift certificate for a massage at a local spa, which by the way, was definitely the perfect gift. A bottle of Sugar Scrub was included with the gift certificate, which I thought was nice at the time, but then I never gave it another thought. I had never heard of or used a sugar scrub before, and just wasn’t sure about the usage. I was almost tempted not to ever use it, but then I finally remembered I had it and gave it a try. Are you kidding me? Where have I been all of my life? I never realized how totally stuck in my box I’ve been to where I never had a clue that something so wonderful existed. I’ve spent my entire adult life suffering from scaling skin each winter and buying non-penetrating lotion after lotion to try to make my skin soft again while the whole time the remedy was so near at hand. Ridiculous!

So now my bottle is getting close to being empty and I decided to go the website of the company that makes the scrub to buy a new bottle and I have to tell you I was shocked at their price. Remember, it’s sugar based. There was just no way I was going to pay $32.00 for a bottle of sugar and some oil. I have a thrift shop, remember? So I continued looking for other sources and found several sites with directions on how to make the scrub. Hallelujah! It is so easy to make and once again I had to wonder what rock I crawled out from under. I mean who knew?
Another important fact I learned is that sugar cane produces glycolic acid, one of the natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliates the skin. Again, who knew?

Below are a couple of recipes to make your own sugar scrub. Trust me, you won’t be sorry.

Sugar Scrub #1
This super-simple formula has been softening and nourishing skin for centuries.
It only calls for two ingredients, and the results will gently exfoliate dead skin cells, improve skin clarity and softness, and stimulate your glandular system.

INGREDIENTSHow to make a sugar scrub at Gone-tomorrow.com

1/2 cup sugar
Enough cold-pressed oil (olive, wheat germ, peanut, corn, or sunflower) to dampen the mixture. You may also add a drop of your favorite essential oil. Check to see if your essential oils must be diluted before touching your skin.
Gently massage this exfoliating scrub all over your body and face* before you shower with a light soaping and rinse. Repeat once or twice a month.

*I’ve used the scrub I have on my face, but if you have extremely sensitive skin you may want to skip this part.
The next scrub uses more ingredients, but only if you want to add the other items.

Scrub #2

INGREDIENTSRelax at you 'at home' spa. Gone-tomorrow.com

50 Percent white cane sugar
50 percent vegetable glycerin to moisten the sugar. (Basically, this means olive oil, avocado oil or something similar.)
Small amounts of aloe vera gel, if desired
1 or 2 drops of essential oil if desired. Try combining orange and lavender
Enough ground hibiscus powder for a pink color if desired.

Combine the ingredients in a bowl, scoop some of the scrub onto your hand and massage gently onto your skin for a minute (The scrub will actually tighten on your skin like a masque) Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes before rinsing.

Warning: Once you use this scrub, you’ll never stop!

Here is a variation of the sugar scrub I thought was worth adding to the mix.

Banana Scrub

Too many bananas in the fruit bowl? Skip the banana bread and feed your skin instead with this luxuriant yet simple homemade banana body sugar scrub.
Bananas are a natural for body care. Their creamy pulp is luscious and soothing and works well as a carrier for other ingredients. Banana is nourishing and moisturizing and can be used for gentle exfoliation and skin-tightening.

In this simple formula, bananas and sugar are combined for a wonderfully aromatic and gently exfoliating body scrub.

Bottles to pour you sugar scrub into. Gone-Tomorrow.comINGREDIENTS
1 ripe banana
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (optional)

Mash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky paste. Do not over mix or it will become too watery. If you want a banana scrub for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar.

In the shower, slather the sugar mixture over your body avoiding the shower flow if possible and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with warm water.

How many times have bananas gone bad, and you end up throwing them out? Countless times for me and so now I have alternative usage to making banana cake or whatever. Something I rarely do, by the way.

I hope you find this information useful and that you give one of the recipes a try. I know I will.

What do you think?  Did we ‘Redefine Thrift Stores’ with this posting?

Colors, Colors, Colors

Bing & Grondahl Mother's Day Plate blue and white colors

Check out what plates we have available in our Collectible Plates

While looking through some of the decorating sites found on the web, one element of current home decor trends was clearly predominate; the year 2016 is all about color! Bright colors at that! I saw Hot Pinks, pale pinks, yellows, turquoise, and purple to just name a few. Although, none of these colors made me stop and want to write about them. Until I came across the following photo from House Beautiful. I stopped dead in my tracks. House Beautiful-Delft Blue decor colors I have always loved the delft blue. I really prefer it in smaller doses though so I think there’s a bit too much of a good thing in the photo at left. In my opinion, the blue and white together are so striking that you need only had a touch here and there for an eye-catching look.  One great and inexpensive accent would be to add a Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate, or a Bing & Grondahl, Mother’s Day plate, as shown here. You can hang a plate or two on the wall or place on a couple of them on a plate stand and add to other items on a side table or buffet. Since yellow is one of the new 2016 colors, you’ll find that the royal blue looks fantastic with bright yellow!

Everyday home with blue and white decor color

Royal blue and white accented with pale aqua for an interesting effect.

I found another photo with blue and white accents, but this homemaker added a pale aqua to the mix, which in my opinion,  is so gorgeous. It made me stop and think that we should at the least try it and if it works, just go for it!

Which brings me to the following decorating ideas. Mixing antiques with ‘now’ decor isn’t anything new and I think most of us have always added something from grandma’s house to one or more of our rooms. I’m not so sure I would have thought to throw in these next few items,  yet they’re so, so cutely placed!

Vintage thermos bottles-Added color

Add a couple of vintage Thermos bottles to your vignette, along with an old ice chest to liven up your decor and to make for some conversations!

Collection of old cameras. White offset with black and silver

Your shabby chic wall will look ever so chic with antique cameras hanging on the wall or one single camera sitting on the a table. Or both!

Easter DIY With Recyclables

Fun Make it Yourself Gift BoxEaster DIY With Recyclables

Easter DIY With Recyclables-With Easter quickly approaching and the weather not providing too many shopper friendly options, I thought this make-it-yourself-gift-box would be fun to make.

This unique Easter gift box is super easy to make! A clear plastic food container is simply painted pink, blue, or yellow and topped with colorful funny-paper posies and a bow.

Easter Gift Box Directions

Recycled items: small plastic food container and color comics from a newspaper.

You will also need- 7/8 yd of 7/8″ wide ribbon, desired color chalk paint or any spray paint, floral wire, wire cutters, green floral tape, tracing paper, and a low-temperature hot glue gun and glue sticks.

  1. Paint the container
  2. Making the roses. (Make two following the directions) Trace petal pattern below, onto tracing paper; cut out. Use pattern to cut 6 petals from comics. Wrap top edges of each petal around a pencil to curl. (Fig. 1.)
  3. For rose center, cut a 3″ x 13″ strip from comics. Fold 1 end of strip 1/4″ to 1 side (wrong side). Matching wrong sides, fold strip in half lengthwise. (long folded edge is top of strip). Beginning with unfolded end, roll about one+quater of strip tightly; glue to secure. Roll remainder of strip loosely, folding small uneven pleats in bottom edge and spot gluing bottom edge to secure.
  4. With top edges curling outward, wrap bottom of 1 petal around bottom of rose center; glue to secure. Wrap a second petal around rose center opposite first petal; glue to secure. Overlapping petals, repeat to glue remaining petals around rose center.
  5. For stem on each rose, glue 1 end of a 2″ length of floral wire into bottom of rose. Wrap bottom of rose and wire with floral tape, covering wire completely.
  6. Follow Making a Multi-Loop Bow (Fig. 2) to make a double-loop bow from ribbon,  below.
  7. Arrange roses and bow on box as desired; glue in place.

Making a Multi-Loop Bow

Fig. 2
Layered Bow

A layered bow is two (or many) bows layered on top of each other and held together with the wires from the topmost bow. The wires on the other bows are cut close and the top bow has a center loop. The bottom bow is the largest and has the longest tails.

Tools

Instructions

1. Measure the length of  ribbon for the first tail. Hold the ribbon with your thumb and forefinger.

Multi-loop bow directions-

2. With the right side of the ribbon facing out, make a loop one side.  (8″ of ribbon makes a 4″ loop)

Multi-loop bow directions-

3. Make a full twist of the ribbon so the right side of the ribbon is still facing out and make a loop toward the other side.

Multi-loop bow directions-

4. Continue alternating loops right and left, fully twisting the ribbon as you go, until you have made the required number of loops on each side. Put florist wire around the center and twist it tightly at the back of the bow. The wire should be tight enough so the loops move independently and can be adjusted to make a full, fluffy bow.

Boo! Halloween

Boo! Halloween. Halloween SkullsYou know it’s going to sneak up on us if we don’t start planning for it now. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, which is good for late night parties. Not so good if you have to work and need to put together your haunted houses to scare all the kids in the neighborhood! Or to get everyone in their costumes.

This year we do not have much in the way of costumes or decorations on our site. There might be a couple costumes left, and of course you can check out what we have in the way of vintage clothing if you want to go retro.  This is exactly what happens when you wait until the last minute to start planning. We didn’t plan for Halloween and we have nothing. Don’t let this happen to you.

I’m sharing a recipe this time. Hope you like it!

5 Kitchen Decorating Ideas

5 Kitchen Decorating Ideas for the Designer on a Budget

Do you think your kitchen looks drab and lifeless? Or is it too small that things cluttered the counter or the cabinet? If you don’t have the budget to do a renovation, you can at least do some kitchen decorating. It does not have to be expensive if you do it the smart way. Set a cost limit and make sure that you stay within the budget by recycling stuff and buying items that are on sale.

To help you with your project, here are 5 kitchen decorating ideas for the designer on a budget.

1. Turn Laminate Countertops into a Faux Stone

Pull the laminate off the countertop with the use of a hammer and pry bar. (Hammer the pry bar from the edge of the laminate top and yank it off.) Then sand the wood (counter) top, removing pieces of wood sticking up and loose splinters with a palm sander.

To get the perfect “stone” look, use Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint. Apply the paint directly to the wood in three coats allowing the paint to dry after each coat. Seal paint with Minwax Finishing Paste Wax to protect the paint from fading. You will also need an AutoRight Detailing Polisher to apply the wax.

Place a tiny amount of wax on the foam applicator then apply it to the counter, covering all the painted area in the process. Allow the wax to set for at least 20 minutes then using the microfiber bonnet, buff the entire top.

If you’ll be using the countertop a lot, use a heavier sealant like polycrylic or polyurethane that will withstand water a lot better. The finished product should look like this. counter

2. Personalize Cabinet Doors

Personalize you cabinet doors by creating your own pulls using printed oilcloth handles. With a pair of scissors, cut a narrow strip of oilcloth measuring approximately 1-1/4×14 inches in your chosen design. Fold the cloth in half and stitch the two long sides to make a pocket. Insert three layers of cut heavy cardstock inside the pocket to gain enough support then stitch both ends of the pocket closed. Paint two screws in colors that coordinate with the pulls and let them dry. Attach the pulls to your cabinet using the painted screws. Now you have pretty personalized cabinet doors.

3. Decorative Magnetic Spice Rack

To reduce clutter in your cabinets and counters, make your own wall-mounted, magnetic spice rack. Creating a magnetic spice rack will help you save a lot as pre-made ones are quite expensive and may not be designed for the space you have in mind. To learn how to make one like what is pictured below, click here for the step-by-step instructions.

4. DIY Wooden Coffee Cup Hanger

If you want to add a rustic touch to your kitchen this kitchen decorating idea is just what you need. It’s easy to do and you only need a piece of wood, the older the better, and a few hooks to hang the cups.
First cut the wood according to the length and width that you want. Pierce the hooks into the widest part of the wood and put proper distance between them to ensure that your cups or mugs will not bump each other. Stain the wood with a natural tint and hang it on a wall in your kitchen. You can also make one for your tongs, ladles, and other kitchen utensils.

5. Colorful Mason Jar Organizers

Paint the interior of a clean and dry mason jar either by pouring paint into the jar and swishing around until fully covered or by spray painting. You can use different color chalk paint or acrylic for each jar. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry. Label each jar using sticker paper, add the corresponding kitchen supplies then place them on the counter. Quick and easy kitchen decorating idea on a budget! ebay redemption code

Let’s DIY

Some DIY projects to fill your idle time.

The first one is primarily for our West Coast friends having to endure years of no rain to speak of, but clearly can be used for anyone wanting to conserve water. Of course it may take people on the West Coast a couple of years to fill the barrel.8728b

Unfortunately, instructions are not included. I’m sure though any man that’s handy around the house could figure it out in a minute.

e127The next idea also deals with the great outdoors and uses drought resistant plants to provide an awesome look for your fountain. We happen to have a fountain like this one and rarely do we fill it with water anymore, so this is a great way for it to be useful.

I think this interior décor item is interesting if for no other reason than what it’s made of and the amount of work that went into it’s creation. To that point; I bet you would never guess that the leaves are made from toilet paper rolls!  Each leaf is then sewn on the machine to give it the center vein. They’re spray painted silver or whatever color you would like, then very painstakingly attached with a glue gun to willow branches that were also spray Silver Leaves from Toilet Paper Rollspainted silver. The effect is awesome, yet clearly it does involve a lot of work.  A link to the site with more detailed instructions is attached to the photo and where you’ll also find more projects!

How many times have you seen pallets either laying around by industrial trash receptacles or for sale by someone for next to nothing? When they get their hands on one, most people either make a bookcase, use them to display their collectibles or some other indoor, creative decorative item. Well here is someone who thought outside the box to create this walkway and I love it! Wood Pallet Walkway

DIY Projects!

DIY Project: Do you have an old bed frame sitting around?

DIY Bedframe BenchA while back I spotted a photo of a garden bench I fell in love with. The site had a ton of ideas, but I globbed onto only the one. I mainly liked it because it had that vintage shabby chic look that always gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside and it lets your imagination take you on a journey to a better place and time. At least for me it does. So I searched until I found a site with instructions and then as luck would have it, I also found someone local who was giving away a vintage maple queen size head and footboard. Did you catch the two main words? Giving away. Free. No charge. And I was first in line to take it!

Unfortunately, after explaining to my husband what I wanted and how we/he would build it, he talked me out of the queen size bed because, as he so annoyingly reminded me,  we had a twin bed frame in storage that could be used. I knew it wasn’t going to be the size I was hoping for, nor the look the queen would give me, but I had to go along with what he was willing to do.

That said; in spite of it ending up smaller than what I wanted, it is absolutely adorable and I do love it! The photo above was taken when it was almost complete. It now sports a white cushion with a bright red, orange and green floral design that I purchased at Walmart. If you think my new bench is cute, check out the benches on this site. They’re to die for!! http://www.robomargo.com/bench.html  Oh and by the way; I explained to the woman who was giving the queen bed frame away what I had planned to do with it and she decided instead of getting rid of it, she would keep it and make a garden bench too! So in the end this project was a win-win.

This photo shows an awesome idea for a planter if you don’t have a lot of space, or soil to plant in. What’s great about it too is it can be scaled to whatever size you need. I think once the plants start growing, they will cover up the modern look if that isn’t your style. Instructions are not needed, as it’s a visual thing. So if you Cinder block planterhave cinder block sitting around instead of making a stereotypical bookcase, why not go for an easy outdoor planter? It looks as though the blocks are only stacked against the fence and not secured in any way. Anyway, in my famous last words it looks easy enough to build.

Patio color paletteI found this photo on a posting by Real Simple and chose it because of the colors. Whatever your color palette is this looks to be a simple and perfect way to bring them to the table, so to speak. Just find different elements (try the Goodwill or Salvation Army Thrift Stores or, check us out too) in the same color tones, add flowers, grapes or any object matching the colors. Set them on your patio table and voila!

Decorating for Less

I first ran this article in our newsletter from May of 2009. What’s awesome is I think the technique and designs are still relevant today. Make it your own and have fun with it!

Instant Art, Always in Bloom–

These DIY garden prints add a lot of charm for not a lot of money.

So, you’ve been eyeing (or eying-whichever you prefer) that set of framed botanical prints but just can’t swallow The Gerbera Daisythe price. Or perhaps you love plants, but 19th-century engravings clash with your style. We’ve discovered it’s surprisingly easy, and stylistically liberating, to produce stunning contemporary botanicals from your home computer. At left, a Gerbera daisy is transformed into a color graphic when copied as a transparency in a flatbed scanner.

Picture Perfect Blooms

To create your own botanical images, you’ll need a computer, flatbed scanner, and a willingness to experiment.

Begin by placing plants directly on the platen glass of your scanner. Plant juices will stain the underside Scanning the Imageof the scanner cover, so place a sheet of mounting board over the flowers before closing the cover. Don’t worry if you flatten the plants; part of the surprise is seeing them in two dimensions.

Dramatic Shapes

Overlap multiple flowers on the scanner or zoom in tightly for abstract effects.

HibiscusMost scanning software allows image adjustments. Play with the scan color, contrast, and brightness to create the most vibrant images. If your scanner includes a transparency adapter, you can shoot through translucent plants to reveal delicate veining and unseen detail.

Experiment With Greenery

A Look at Tablescapes

It’s been a while since I’ve posted decorating tips, so I thought while some of us may be into  spring cleaning it might be the perfect time to refresh your decorating style. I happened across Traditional Home’s (TH) web site and found that they’re spotlighting tablescapes by various designers. Perfect timing, I’d say.

Tablescape design
The tablescape to the left is from designer Gary McBournie’s home. TH says: The sculptural quality of the branches sets off this starry vignette. The lamp shade is just sitting on top of a clear vase and is obviously for effect only. How clever is that?

TH: An interplay of textures adds intrigue to a grouping of objects d’art.Tablescape Design 2
I personally do not care for the pinkish-tone lighting in this photograph, but the art work is intriguing and it shows you how a grouping of different types of art objects seem to work together.

TH: Fuchsia orchids pop against the neutrals of the picture hung above the Tablescape Designs 3table. This is an easy enough change to make in your home. You can add a ‘pop’ of color to any grouping to get an awesome effect. And most certainly the picture in the background wouldn’t have to be in black and white. Any muted color scheme would do.

You can find a lot of cute, inexpensive items in our Home Decor category that can help you to achieve similar looks to what are shown here.

To be continued with more Tablescapes in our next issue.

Men’s Fashion and Sense of Style

responsive image

Men are not like women when it comes to fashion sense. They do not really go for the fashionable in as much as they prefer to have comfortable clothes that suit their personality and goals for the day. Women, on the other hand, must project beauty and grace with everything that they wear. Indeed, they can even sometimes sacrifice comfort in exchange for good looks. Men have no such burden. If it is comfortable and if it is socially acceptable, then it can be worn in public.

However, this does not imply that men lack a sense of fashion. This is, as a matter of fact, far from the truth. Men are just as fashionable as women; it is just that the difference is worlds apart. Generally, men can go out with minimum attire like tees, trousers, and the occasional hoodies. However, in select occasions, men can wear more fashionable attires. The idea with the fashion preference of men is primarily anchored on comfort Men's Dress Shirtand practicality: the fewer and lighter that one will wear, the fewer and lighter will be the laundry. Of course, this includes the minimal cost of the clothing.

Media has changed the way people think. This includes the fact that men are also influenced by the media with regards to the idea of fashion and style. Basically, most of the styles in a specific region of the world are affected by the media stars that they idolize. For instance, in South Korea, K-Pop groups have more radical western influenced formal attires that are also largely useable even in informal settings. The appearance of such attires has sparked a national frenzy dominated by young men trying to get hold of similar fashion styles.

In other parts of the Western hemisphere, the fashion sense is more simple and straightforward. Men in this part of the world are still thoughtful of the practicality in the style, as well as the inherent comfort that is expected in the things that we wear. That being said, sweaters have long been recognized as a typical part of men’s everyday style. Sweaters do look neat, and they give a great deal of comfort to the body given the cold climate that we are having.

While a few go after expensive attires, the greater majority prefer less expensive alternatives. Indeed, one can still be fashionable and timely without necessarily burning off his pockets. There are a lot of online stores which sell fashionable items for men. There are some shops that sell vintage goods which are coming back to the limelight, thanks to their comeback in the mainstream media.

There is no doubt that men want to try these things themselves and be a part of the mainstream individuals. Fortunately, there are online shops which sell these goods and attires at extremely low prices. For instance, gone-tomorrow.com is rightfully named because the goods we sell are often times bought on the same day they are seen by our customers. Why? Basically, they really are both fashionable and extremely cheap. And if you don’t think they’re cheap enough, you can always take advantage of their “Name Your Price Sale”, and do just that!

Let’s Talk Vintage Clothing

responsive image

Basically, vintage clothing, a term referring to old-fashioned clothing, can make one highly conspicuous in a crowd. With all the peeps wearing modern and ultramodern clothing, one would indeed be noticed if she wears 1960’s clothes. For many who prefer vintage clothes, it is a statement – an expression of both style and soul. For others, it is simply an effort to be unique and to be different.

But, there seems to be a popular misunderstanding or misconception with the meaning of the term vintage clothes. A lot of people are confused with vintage clothing and antique clothing. Well, is there really a difference between the two? There is a big difference, as a matter of fact. When we speak of vintage clothing we are talking about those which came to existence and became popular during the 1960s up to the 1980s. On the other hand, antique clothing is the popular clothing which came to being during the 1920s and earlier. Basically, we wear antique clothing during costume parties – we do not necessarily wear one in order to show affluence or to make fashion statement.

What are the things that you need to watch out for when buying vintage apparel? There are a lot of factors and considerations that must be thought of carefully prior to your buying spree. First of all, you must know where to buy the vintage goods. There are a lot of shops in malls that sell attractive vintage clothing. These are pretty irresistible shops because of their impressive displays. However, buying at malls may not be entirely a good idea; mainly because they’re more costly – significantly more costly than those which can be bought in smaller shops outside the malls. As a matter of fact, you will be able to get your vintage clothing and apparel at online vintage stores and you will be able to get handsome deals online.

You have to be fashion-conscious when buying vintage. Just because the item is vintage, doesn’t mean it will make the statement you want it to make. Take for example some of the clothing from the 1970’s. Polyester, elastic waist, pull up pants?  Yuck! The best way to wear vintage is to blend a vintage item with something from today’s fashion lineup. This is way easier to do than one might think.  Try this: Pair a vintage, cute top with your jeans and you’ll for sure be stylin’. But then, there are also plenty of dresses from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that would still make a fashion statement if worn today.  Just have some fun with it!

A Look at Jewelry

responsive image

Today, jewelry is still be a significant status symbol.  As a matter of fact, instead of subsiding, jewelry has become more important in the 21st century. Even with the presence of seemingly more luxurious items and gadgets, jewelry continues to be an undeniable symbol of wealth and power. And in particular Gold, as a matter of fact, is again being considered to displace and replace the dollar and other banknotes as the bloodline of global transactions.  Prior to 1971 when the Gold Standard was cast off by the government, our dollars could be traded in for gold through the Gold Reserve. Today, some say there isn’t more than 8,133 metric tons remaining in Fort Knox. Hardly enough to cover any of the dollars the government continues to print.

Getting back to jewelry. To have a more in depth understanding of the subject, we need to first take a close look at how gold jewelry is actually made. Basically, gold in its purest form cannot be made into jewelry. Why is that? Gold is very soft and therefore, it cannot maintain a fixed shape. To address this particular problem, other elements are added to the gold in order to make it a little harder.

We often speak of Karats when we want to buy jewelry and we are always asked, “How many Karats do you need?” Or, more commonly, “How many Karats can you afford?” Just what are Karats (with the symbol K)? A karat is not a unit of weight.  The word karat refers to the amount of gold in a particular item. Karats are measured in units of 24, where 24 karat gold is pure gold. 18 karat gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts alloys such as copper, nickel, silver or zinc. 14 karat gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts alloy.  Most gold jewelry is made in 14K gold, or 14 parts gold to 10 parts alloy.  The color variances of gold, such as white to rose are achieved by the alloys used to mix with the gold parts.

To make jewelry more affordable, gold plating came into the fashion jewelry market with the first being Gold Plate: This process uses a base metal such as steel or brass, which is dipped into a bath of electroplating solution, with a lump of solid gold. When an electric current is applied, a thin layer of gold is deposited on the metal. Since the plating is quite thin, the plate will eventually wear off.

The next method is called Vermeil: (Pronounced: Vermay) This is sterling silver that has been gold-plated. Most vermeil is plated with 22K-24K gold, which is a good combination for those with allergies to normal, plated jewelry items.

Finally we have Gold-filled: These jewelry items are not actually filled with gold. They are made of a base metal

(usually brass or copper) covered by sheets of gold in a mechanical bonding process. Effectively a thick coat of gold: the gold content is 5% or 1/20 of the total weight. Gold-filled is used sometimes for your top-of-the-line fashion jewelry. Usually made with 14k gold, it is hard wearing. With reasonable care it will not peel or flake, and should last as long as solid 14k gold jewelry and it is safe for most people with sensitive skin.

At gone-tomorrow.com, you may not always find gold jewelry in all its glory since as soon as anything is added that’s gold, it flies of the shelf, so to speak.  You will be able to find gold-tone and other metals, such as sterling silver and the newest metal to hit the floor running; stainless steel. And it all comes in every form, size and shape. Of course, gold is one of the most affordable and popular metals, whether in the gold color or in white gold. It is made even more radiant and luxurious and grand if the gold jewelry is made

Home Decorating Ideas

responsive image

Decorating or redecorating your home is far from being a simple and easy task. It is a complicated challenge that requires deep thinking and a great deal of hard work. Basically, this entails a lot of research in order to know the best decoration styles that may fit our home. Of course, one cannot embark on a decoration adventure without the full understanding of what to do, which to decorate, and what amount to spend. In order to be successful in one’s home decorating goal, he or she must first be ready for it.

First of all, there should be a complete understanding that home decorating is not just about putting up decorations. Indeed, home decorating is way more than that. Basically, it is all about art – as a matter of fact, this is where a combination and a concoction of artistic ideas merged into a meaningful whole. In simplistic and concrete terms, home decorating involves matching designs, colors, textures, and even motifs. For instance, a golden framed mirror might not be suitable in a room where the motif is centered on native materials. Such an item might look grand and luxurious, but it is truly and largely out of place in a room mentioned in the example. Basically, if the motif or theme is native-material centered, then your items must be in harmony with your theme.

What if in your opinion your room does not have a theme? What if you like a more eclectic look where anything goes? Well, everything has a theme. Even the eclectic look of a little bit of everything is a theme.  Believe it or not, some spend a lot of money and try very hard to achieve the eclectic look, while making it seem like a haphazard design put together on a shoestring budget. As an example of one way to achieve an eclectic look; is to add flowers to a contemporary vase, set atop an antique entry table.  This can set the decorating tone for your entire house. Don’t stop at the vase: If you place large a mottled mirror, on the wall, the image of the flower arrangement will to dance off it,  and you’ll have created a picture-perfect scene.  You’re still not finished though: the inclusion of antique candle holders or decorative jars that may only look like antiques, will tie the entire eclectic scene together.

If you want to keep it simple, then opt for a balanced and light motif. Do not bring in heavily decorated Eclectic decorating ideasdisplays. Instead, buy light materials which are inexpensive and understated. You can make the look your own by adding color to a neutral tone room.  Throw pillows or a rug in a bold color against neutral tones will bring a room to life and very inexpensively.  Other ways to add colors or change the look of a room inexpensively is by adding things like a wall clock, photo frames, coat hooks, and shelves. Here at www. gone-tomorrow.com we sell many, inexpensive décor items to help you to add a different look to your room. Don’t forget too, what a little spray of paint can do for any item! You can visit one of the DIY sites to get ideas of how to repurpose.

A clear jar can be made to look like an antique aqua glass with the use of glass paint!! Or you can make a jar look like mercury glass by swirly mirror paint around inside. Again, check the DIY or Pinterest for all the ideas you need to change up something we have on our site.

Always keep in mind though that buying more decorations for your home does not necessarily mean a better decorated home. Having decorations that do not fit the motif will only make things worse for you and your home and your pocket.

What’s in a Name?

responsive image

What’s in a Name?

Apparently a lot more than I thought. We’ve been in business for almost 12 years and have always been known as Once in a Blue Moon Online Thrift Store with a domain name of www.gone-tomorrow.com. It was all so perfect when we started out because we could use the slogan of: Once in a Blue Moon Online Thrift Store,  Where Merchandise is Here Today and Gone-Tomorrow.com.

Well as always, things change. The search engines or I should say, Google doesn’t like that the site name doesn’t match gone-tomorrow.com. Really I understand completely. I guess if you wanted to go to Amazon, you wouldn’t think to type in Merchandise for Sale and expect to end up at Amazon and yet that’s what I am expecting everyone to do: to remember Blue Moon Online Thrift Store, but type in gone-tomorrow.com.

Now we get to come up with a new logo to match Gone-Tomorrow. I love the tropical theme we’ve had all these years, so it might be a bit of a challenge. 🙂 NOPE. DONE!

We’ll keep you posted!

You Can’t Judge a Book By its Cover.

responsive image

Sometimes we make statements without even realizing the total depth of their meaning. For example; “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Your first thought may be that you should not read the book if you don’t like the cover. That’s a logical deduction. But then there’s the chance the meaning could be to not judge a person by the way they look. How well I know that meaning having said this to my own children many, many times.  There are clearly a lot of different scenarios that may warrant the use of this phrase and I am going to point out yet another one now!

When browsing our site, the you first thing you may see is a photo of an item along with the a simple description and the price. Now if you were to simply judge that item based on what you see initially, you wouldn’t know that the item is listed with FREE SHIPPING!

I have been trying to find a way to flag these items, but haven’t had much luck yet. I’m not giving up though. In the meantime; please do not ‘judge our books by their covers.’

Oh and if you see an item you must have and FREE SHIPPING hasn’t been offered on it yet and Free Shipping Couponshould be, please contact me. I can offer you a coupon for free shipping.

Are you looking forward to 2014?

I’ve heard chatter about how ‘they’ can’t wait for 2014 to get here so things will be better. I guess if you believe in numerology, 2014 could be a better year for you. On the other hand, why bother waiting until 2014 to make your life better?

Well, I can answer that for you! The reason you’ll wait until then is because there’s only two days left of 2013! And you know the motto: Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? Or is it the other way around? Whatever.

I personally am going to try to make myself be a better person in 2014 by having a more positive attitude about situations in my life. I don’t know how I’m going to do it though, especially when I have a problem thinking positive thoughts when I’ve just finished cleaning the kitchen and a family member comes along behind me and creates another mess for me to clean up. I really do want to see the silver lining in this scenario, but I just can’t quite seem to get there.

Whatever your plans are for 2014 I hope you succeed in achieving all that you aspire to. Again, I know I’m going to try my darndest to be better. I think we should meet back here on this date in 2014 and see how we did. Is it a date?

In the meantime, have a Happy, Safe and Prosperous New Year!

Sharon

The Holidays Are Here Again!

responsive image

Yes siree! It’s that time of year again and you either love it or hate it, but no matter which way it is, the holidays are here to stay for the next few weeks!

This year’s shopping frenzy was launched by a few of the stores on Thanksgiving Day and this was over protests from many people who thought the holiday should remain just that: A holiday where shopping is forbidden. I personally do not have a problem with the stores opening on Thanksgiving Day  if they have willing employees to work the shifts. After all, those same stores are also online and are open for business 24/7/365.  And besides, after you eat dinner what else is there to do, but shop?

The following day, or Black Friday as it’s more commonly known, was once again met with mob scenes at stores such as WalMart. I really do have a problem with this type of shopping because I do not think there’s anything out there worth getting into a fight over.

So we got past Black Friday with our big screen TV’s and were faced next with Small Business Saturday. Technically, we fall into this group. I mean we’re definitely a small business. I do not have much to add to this fairly new shopping day as I didn’t hear anything about how the businesses fared.

Now, we come to our domain! Cyber Monday! If you were not already shopped out by now, you should have been shopping the deals you could find online. And I hope you found some, but if you didn’t no need to panic because Cyber Monday has been expanded to include the entire week. That’ right! Cyber Monday is now Cyber Week!! Now that’s smart marketing because you still have plenty of time to shop till you drop!

To that point, you should know that we have a lot of hidden deals; like how we offer free shipping on certain items, only you have to check out the item in order to know this. We also have some little girl hair bows that are offered at a reduced price when you buy 3 at a time. (The photos the consignor sent are not the best, so don’t hold that against her. The bows are really awesome!! ) And of course, we have our Ace-in-the-Hole: The Name Your Price Sale! Where else can you shop and name the price you’re willing to pay? And it isn’t that hard to do: Send us an email at Contact.us@gone-tomorrow.com and tell us which item(s) you want and what you’re willing to pay. That’s all there is to it!

So let’s go shopping!

Online Thrift Store Business

responsive image

I thought I should take a few minutes to update you on what is going on with our online thrift and consignment store. If you visited us in the past you know we now have a complete new look and the site functions very differently and admittedly it’s probably better!

I am a little disappointed though in how long it’s taking to add our merchandise. In some cases items have had to be dealt with 3 or 4 times. It’s been partly due to the learning curve of this program and partly due to changing how the merchandise is presented and the balance is just the norm for adding an item.

In a perfect world, (like the way our redesign was handled in 2009) we could take our time to make sure everything was as good as it could get before switching over to the new design. This time we didn’t have the luxury of time. Our ranking on Google was slipping on a weekly basis and this was serious. I won’t go into all the details, but Google changed the way they present their search results which left us out in the cold. For us it was like the saying goes: Do or die!!! So we did. And I think Google will like us again soon.

We hope you’ll hang in there while we continue adding our merchandise and correcting our original mistakes. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed as we have so much new merchandise it will probably take us until we have to redesign the site again to get it on. Just kidding.
